The Westlink

The Westlink is a major road connection; M1 motorway coming into Belfast and the M2 motorway going out. Built in the 1970s, the Westlink has become such a vital traffic thoroughfare, that work is being done to widen it. Work was actually completed on the Westlink in 1983. The Westlink was designated the A12[1].

Because Belfast as a city is quite car dependent, the Westlink, which links all three Belfast motorways is very important. The Westlink is a dual carriageway that skirts around the western edge of the city centre[2]. Because the Westlink suffers from serious congestion, work is being done to widen it. This work, the most significant road scheme in Belfast for some years began early in 2006 and isn't due to be completed until 2009[3].
